“Is Obama Trying To Hide His Past?,” “How is Mitt Going To Handle Medicare and Social Security?” And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

Is Obama Trying To Hide His Past?
Q (from 99568): We are all aware that if someone hides information, it MUST be something bad, or they would be eager to show it. The current president has hidden nearly everything about his past. Are we wrong to assume there is something there he does not want us to see? Do we have a fundamental right to know about his past?
A: Yes we do, but right now I’m more worried about his future.

How Is Mitt Going To Handle Medicare and Social Security?
Q (from 37138): My friend was watching channel 5 news and they said Mitt wants to change seniors Medicare, where everyone gets private insurance and then the government will give them one lump sum, or something like that. I did not see it. I think the media lies and uses scare tactics. Do you know how or if Mitt is going to handle Medicare and our Social Security?
A: Mitt proposes no change for those at or near retirement age. For younger folks they could choose regular Medicare or get a payment from the government with which to buy their own insurance. Don’t let them scare you. Mitt is trying to keep it from going bankrupt. The Democrats are only interested in getting past the next election and leaving a colossal mess for our kids.

How Will Obama’s Supreme Court Justice Appointments Affect Us?
Q (from 43334): What are your thoughts about what will happen to our great country if Obama gets back in and can appoint more inept supreme court justices?
A: It would certainly be bad news in many respects but you’ve put your finger on one of the most important—Supreme Court justices. If he is reelected then much depends upon how the senate is constituted. If the
Democrats have less that a 60 vote majority and are not able to cut off a filibuster by the Republicans, then Obama would have to moderate. Right now it’s looking like a 50-50 split.

How Much Control Will Romney Have Over The Budget If He Is Elected?
Q (from 76028): Hi Fred, I had hopes I would be able to vote for you in 2008, but alas. I do, however, enjoy your column.
If Mr. Romney is president the next four years but liberals in the senate (Rs & Ds) are able to suppress a vote on the budget, do you think it is likely the ongoing budget will be status quo, with the stimulus a repeating part of the bloated budget? If so, how much discretion does the president have to just not spend it? And on a related note, where has the stimulus money been spent in the “out” years, those years that was not actually voted on? Thanks!
A: A budget or a “continuing resolution” has to be passed every year and the president has the right to veto. They will not have the votes to override his veto and they will either have to work it out or see who blinks first. A new president Romney would have the upper hand.

What Can We Do To Give Our Military The Chance To Vote?
Q (from 75756): Fred…I’m eighty-one years old and not in good health. I’ve been a fan of yours for many years. Question, what can we/I do to help the military have a chance to vote? Anyone can plainly see Obama is doing every thing he can to see they don’t get the chance.
A: You’re absolutely right. That’s what’s going on in Ohio, for example, a crucial state. My old senate colleague, Mike DeWine, is the attorney general in Ohio now. I talked to his about this very thing and he is fighting hard for our armed forces. I think this will hurt the Democrats with all right -thinking people.

Is Canada Facing The Same Fiscal Issues We Are?
Q (from 98208) Fred, I know we need change to get back to the freedoms we have lost, but what is going on in Canada? Are they facing the same type of losses of freedom that we are facing? Is their spending out of control like ours is? Thank you!
A: No, they are in better shape than we are financially. Prime Minister
Harper is a good guy–a conservative by Canadian standards.

What Does “Politically Correct” Mean?
Q (from 06370): Do you know who coined the phrase “politically correct” and what does it constitute? People I ask have no idea at all. Thank you.
A: Good question. I don’t know how it started but I’ll give you my own definition: Saying something in a way that is designed, primarily, not to offend anyone, instead of saying it in a more direct and truthful way.

Do You Support Term Limits For Congress?
Q (from 71024): Do you think term limits on senate and congress would help matters? Get rid of those 10-20-year veterans who are there to line their pockets and get new blood in every 8 years that may actually listen to the people that got them there and help this country- WE DO NEED HELP!
A: I’ve been a term limits supporter all my professional life. I promised to limit my own terms in the senate and did so. I think careerism in politics is the source of many of our problems. People have too much at stake and will say and do anything to stay in instead of telling the truth, which often people don’t want to hear.

“When Will Romney Confront Obama’s Failed Policies Directly?”, “Why Haven’t We Cut Imports?” And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

When Will Romney Confront Obama’s Failed Policies Directly?
Q (from 93307): When is Mitt Romney going to get off the defense and go on offense?
He should be pointing out all of Obama’s failed policies. The Democrats want him to quit being secretive about his Taxes. What about Obama’s School records, Draft Card and Birth certificate? I’m an American of Mexican decent and I would make sure that all the Latinos were made aware of Obama’s ability to pass immigration reform when he had the house, Senate and the Presidency. Instead he pushed his stupid health bill. Make the Latinos aware that this last immigration blunder was noting more than throwing the Mexicans another bone before election time. They do this every election.
A: You are right on in every respect my friend and I’m convinced that there are many more folks like you out there who are not being duped. And thanks for your service.

Why Haven’t We Cut Imports?
Q (from 71730): Both parties are always talking about no jobs and what to do but no one ever mentions cutting imports. Why?
A: Because imports are cheaper than similar goods made here. Also, if we place tariffs on imports other countries would do the same on our exports. The better question is why do we place such high taxes and regulations on our companies? That does more to kill jobs than imports.

Wouldn’t Fast and Furious Have Been The Grounds For More Stringent Gun Control?
Q (from 96025): I think you’re wrong about fast and furious. If it had gone on until completion and been undetected by anyone, for sure it would have been the grounds for more stringent gun control laws. You could have counted on that being the case.
A: You may be right. It’s just that they know that gun control is a loser for them regardless of how it turned out. Notice how they are running from the issue even though the media is trying to push them there after the tragedy in Colorado.

What Makes You An Authority On These Questions?
Q (from 32304): Can you articulate what makes you an authority on the questions asked of you? Can I ask more than one question? If so, what are you doing to save our country from these Communists?
A: Just being an ole boy who has seen the best and worst of our government up close and personal for a long time but you be the judge. Of course you can ask multiple questions. As a candidate I got accused of giving more than one answer to the same question so who am I to stop you from asking more that one question.

Should The US Participate In Funding The United Nations?
Q (from 89415): I read the Obama administration would like to give gun control, control of the internet, and the Treaty of the Sea to the united nations. I believe this is awful. What is your opinion? Should the US participate in funding the United Nations?
A: I think it has become a waste of money and gives legitimacy to tin horn dictators.

How Can Americans Make An Informed Vote When The Media Supports Obama?
Q (from 63026): With one of the most critical institutions – the MSM – in America “broken down” and part of the BHO misinformation strategy, how will Americans who are ill-informed or disengaged, especially young 1st time voters, really understand how their voting for the socialists agenda of BHO is a VOTE against their own best interests? Why don’t Americans know that the House has sent more than 35 jobs bills to the Senate only to have Senator Reid block any attempt to allow the bills to be considered?
A: First the MSM agrees with Obama. Secondly, with Fox and talk radio people are getting more info than ever before…IF THEY WANT IT. Third, most of these jobs bills are baloney anyway. The better point is that the senate hasn’t passed a budget in 3 yrs. Thanks.

Typo In The Last “Ask Fred”?
Q (from 08824): Typo. I think you meant Obama WILL NOT keep his word. The word NOT is missing in your last Ask Fred email.
A: No, I’m afraid he WILL keep his word. He says he will continue to raise taxes and regulation and grow government.

Why Hasn’t Obama Been Impeached?
Q (from 83846): Why has he not been impeached?
A: I get a lot of impeachment questions so here’s a try for all of them. I understand the frustration — every time I see Obama abuse executive orders for example. Without getting into a long conversation about what constitutes “high crimes and misdemeanors,” some of which may surprise and disappoint you, let me make a practical point. It may infuriate you but, nevertheless, it’s true. The truth is what I always try to do here. Without the support of the American people, a president will never be impeached. And to put the country through that exercise to no avail winds up making him stronger. Did you notice the guy the Democrats chose to give the big speech at their convention, the most popular, big name they could come up with to bail them out with the American people. That would be Bill Clinton, a guy whom I voted to impeach a few years ago. Most people were outraged at what he did but they didn’t want to see their vote for him cast aside and they were not for impeachment. Now he’s the Democrats’ “go to” guy. As hard as it is for me to understand, Obama’s likability rating is still pretty high. Even good, solid Republicans in Congress are not going to waste their time on something that can’t work when there is something staring them in the face that will work. Defeating him at the polls. And that’s why he’s not been impeached.

“Why Can’t People See Through Obama’s Lies?”, “Can We Trust Romney To Keep His Word?” And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

Why Can’t People See Through Obama’s Lies?
Q (from 91403): I simply cannot understand that with so many intelligent, well educated, influential people who understand just what Obama truly is about, that he will, in all probability, be elected again. Please comment.
A: Just two thoughts on a subject that I could write a lot about (and have). One is about idealism. Some well meaning people who are naive. They see the world the way they want it to be instead of the way it is. The other is about pure self interest. About half the people pay no income tax and about half receive a federal govt. benefit. They want other people to continue the gravy train for them.

Q (from 77084): Dear Fred, Obama has survived a barrage of everything from whispers to shouts concerning his background, blatant lies, executive orders, failure to lead, leaks of vital information… yet according to recent polls he seems to have half of the country supporting him. What is it going to take to get the attention of those people so they see him for who he really is?
A: I believe that the people who care already know. The question is going to be whether there are more people are interested in their country than those who are interested in getting something from the government.

Why Haven’t We Demanded Obama’s Secret Records?
Q (from 23452): With all the demands for Romney’s tax returns, why have we not demanded Obama’s secret college records, his health records and other information he has sealed?
A: Exactly. Call a press conference, stackum up and say “They’re all yours as soon as Obama releases his grades.”

What News Websites Do You Recommend?
Q (from 79109): Fred, would you please recommend several conservative news websites? Keep up the good work you do for this country.
A: National Review and The American Thinker are a couple I refer to. I write on NR occasionally. Thanks.

Why Can’t They Cut The Pay In Washington?
Q (from 38401): Why can’t they cut the pay in Washington, then see who wants to be what? Can it be done? Give them a salary about $3000 month, bet they would all leave.
Also would like to know how much the president makes. Thanks, Fred.
A: Obama gets $400,000 a year. George Washington was offered $25,000. I wonder which was the best deal for citizens? I say let him keep his 400,000 if he’ll just go home!

Why Does Congress Continue To Spend?
Q (from 89120: I used to consult for various Federal Government Agencies. Each year in mid to late August, they would look at what they were budgeted for the year and if it looked like there would be a surplus, they would find ways to spend it – even for something that was not needed. This mentality within the Federal bureaucracy is part of the reason we are in such bad financial trouble. I never could understand why Congress didn’t insist on something like “zero-based budgeting”, where each element of every Agency would have to justify every penny requested. I believe that the Federal Government could easily take an across-the-board cut of ten percent and would still function – but without the fancy “digs”. How can we get Congress to do something like this that has an immediate impact?
A: Two answers. The “spend it quick so we’ll get even more” is largely an executive branch problem even though when the get caught they ought to have their budgets reduced on the spot. Secondly, don’t forget, most money is spent because it benefits members of Congress. They, usually but not always Democrats, traditionally spend more than a president like Bush request. Same old story: we need better inmates running the asylum.

Why Don’t We Swear In New Officers Right After They Are Elected?
Q (from 95969): Why can’t the “lame-duck” session of Congress and Executive offices be made illegal? Swear in the new officers right after they are elected!
A: Tempting idea but not practical. Elections have to be certified, etc. Also, would require a constitutional amendment since a term for a House member, for example, is for a full two years.

Can We Trust Romney To Keep His Word?
Q (from 98026): Can we trust Romney to keep his word on the issues?
A: I believe so but, honestly, no one knows. Frankly, what concerns me more is that Obama WILL keep his word.

Does The Government Have A Say In Reverse Mortgages?
Q (from 40299): I see you on ads for reverse mortgages, but the local newspaper recently had an article that was not favorable to taking one of these mortgages. Also, the ad indicates that it is government backed….that seems to be scary since we are trying to get away from big government being in on everything. In what way would government have a say in your reverse mortgage if you were to do it?
A: The government requires that you be given access to independent counseling, for example, to make sure that you understand how it works and to see if it’s right for you but of course it’s your decision, ultimately. Again, it is not necessarily right for everyone’s circumstances. The same thing can be said about any other kind of mortgage. It’s simply a way to get equity out of your home, for which you pay fees and interest after you are deceased. The house stands good for it. If you don’t need cash, for example, then there’s no need for it. The AARP and many others think it can be an effective tool for many people, however.

Why Didn’t The GOP Start Looking For A Strong Candidate In 2008?
Q (from 75169): When Obama was voted in 4 years ago why didn’t the Republican party start right THEN to get a strong candidate?
A: The “party” doesn’t decide on whom the candidate is going to be. People actually get to vote in the primaries. I’d hate to think whom the insiders would pick.

“Does Fred Have Cred?”, “Is Rubio Legal?”, “What If Obama Wins?” (And Other “Ask Fred” Responses)

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

What would Social Security Look Like If Johnson Had Been Prevented?
Q (from 23168): What state would social security be in at this time if Johnson had been prevented from moving SS from it’s own entity to the general revenue?
A: Up until recently, probably about the same. For several years it paid for itself. Taxes were more than the payout. Now the payout is eating into general revenue making our debt and deficit worse. There never has been a real trust fund or “lock box”—just IOUs in a vault. Now the true condition is easier to disguise than if stand alone and not a part of general revenues.

Is Senator Rubio A Legal Citizen?
Q (from 84337): Considering the fact that Sen. Rubio was born in America in 1971 & that was 4 years before his parents became naturalized American citizens, is he an “anchor baby” or a “natural-born American citizen” ?
A: Not an anchor baby. His parents were not illegal at the time of his birth in US.

Q (from 97836): A lot is being said about Romney’s potential pick for VP.
My question is:  Is Marco Rubio a legal citizen to be a vice president.  I would hate to have him on the ticket and then find out he is un-qualified.
A: He’s legal. He’s been quietly vetted by everybody but his colonoscopy doctor. Him too probably.

What If Obama Wins?
Q (from 83830): What is going to happen to us if the other guy wins?
A: A lot would depend on who won Congress, especially the Senate where usually you need 60 votes to pass legislation. Also, in the unlikely event that we had a two thirds majority, we could override his veto of our legislation. The greatest danger might turn out to be Obama’s being able to nominate a couple of Supreme Court justices. Overall I’d say that when almost half the people pay no income tax and almost half receive some govt. check or benefit it’s clear we are at a tipping point in this country.

How Can We Prevent Voter Fraud?

Will Elections Ever Be Determined By Actual Number Of Votes?
Q (from 37183): Will the people ever get the chance to vote ,state by state and see what the real outcome will be by number of actual votes ,instead of electoral votes in certain states ? It as though our votes don’t count …Thanks
A: I just put up a piece on this subject on my site. You’re right. About 40 states are solid red or blue and will get little attention. 8 to 10 tossup states will decide the election because of how the electoral college works. Could be bad news for Romney.

Why Would You Have Any “Cred”?
Q (from 29910): After your bogus aborted run for President, why would you have any “cred” ?
A: That’s for you to decide, I forgot that when you lose a race for president you’re supposed to join a monastery. Actually, when I observe the “cred” of the guy who won, I don’t feel too bad about it.

Where Do We Go For Facts, Not Opinions In News?
Q (from 20111): When did reporting become opining? We all got our news from honest reporters, not talking heads hawking their many times factless opinions.  The great reporters I remember – Wells Hangen, Edward R. Murrow, Ernie Pyle, Meyer Berger, James Cameron, Walter Cronkite in his early career. Where do we go for facts, not opinions? Thanks.
A: It’s just the times, I’m afraid. The mainstream media went left, conservative media arose to counterbalance it and here we are with each of us having to decide who to watch. I must say we’re all better served now than when we just had the “mainstream.”

Will Congress Call For Impeachment?
Q (from 85248): Isn’t there anyone in The Congress that will bring impeachment calls for Obama, Holder, and Napalatano? They are all killing our nation. Regards and appreciative of all your accomplishments.
A: Guys, get off of this impeachment kick. As a legal matter the founders set the bar pretty high. They had mean, ugly fights but didn’t resolve them this way. Politically, it’s usually a seductive, quick fix that will not fly with most Americans. Let’s beat them the old fashion way, at the ballot box.

Which Party Can’t Pass A Budget?
Q (from 80109): I just got something about how many times the GOP has voted to repeal Obamacare, but can’t vote to pass a budget.  The gist being they have wasted the taxpayers money on all of that.  I know that I read something about the budget, but can’t remember or find what I read.  And I want to respond to this person.  They accuse us of having tunnel vision and not being informed but they are incredibly misinformed and don’t seem to want to know the truth.
A: Boy, talk about leading with their chin. It’s the DEMOCRATIC SENATE that has failed to pass a budget for the last few years because Harry Reid is protecting his boys and girls from “difficult” votes. Meaning votes that the people are against but Democratic interest groups are for. The Republican House has passed budgets. Don’t lettem snooker you. Thanks for your email.

“What Is Eric Holder’s Definition of Truth?”, “Why Don’t Republicans Expose Harry Reid?” And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

What Is Eric Holder’s Definition of “Truth”?
Q (57103): How does Eric Holder understand,  ”I will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth”?
A: You would think that the country’s chief law enforcement official would understand this. For him, politics trumps the truth.

Why does Obama Apologize To Other Countries?
Q (23228): President Obama doesn’t appear to “get along” with other heads of state.  Also, he travels to other countries and seems to apologize for things that past presidents have done, like he is the first president that ever cared about the the world.  Do you think this is just my perception?
A: This has been his strategy and it hasn’t worked. We are held in less regard than ever. His attempt to pacify Putin, especially has been a failure. Iran continues with their nuclear ambitions and we are irrelevant in Egypt.

A Little Housekeeping…
Q (27949): In your 6/18 email, you indicated that the Obamacare tax was a sales tax on the selling price. Per Snopes and several other sources, the tax is an investment income which applies to residential sales wherein the investment income is the sales price minus basis minus $500,000 and various limits based on income. Do you still stand by your answer?
A: No I don’t. I should have known better than use a summary from another source without having read it myself. As with most tax legislation, its complicated and, although I didn’t think I was giving tax advice, I can see how I may have confused some folks. My point was that this is another new tax that has flown under the radar. I’ll leave the calculation to your tax adviser. Thanks.

Why Don’t Republicans Expose Harry Reid?
Q (from 29649): Why does no one ever bring up the fact that Harry Reid is the reason none of the Republican bills are passed? He just never brings them to the floor. Can one person have that much power? Shouldn’t he be required to at least debate them?
A: The old adage is that if you have the votes, you win. If you don’t, you lose. Nowhere is this more true than the Senate. The majority leader has a lot of power but the greatest power is that he controls the most votes on most issues and on practically all highly political issues. The minority can often stop something from happening but can seldom make something happen if Democrats oppose it.  Reid has taken all of this to new levels. We simply need to elect more of our inmates to populate that asylum. Thanks.

Will You Be Doing More Radio Shows?
Q (77345): When will you be on the radio again? Heard you and your wife on Sean Hannity and I sure enjoyed it. God Bless you both.
A: Thanks Sgt. and thanks for your service. I don’t really know. I enjoy it too, especially when I have something to get off my chest (which is most of the time I guess). Love working with Jeri too, since we agree on just about everything political  (maybe because thats because she insists on it). Must say though, I don’t like to be pinned down every day if I want to travel. We’ll pop up here and there. Stay tuned.

Did Roberts Do The “Right Thing”?
Q (from 23805): “Rampant speculation as to why Justice Roberts ruled as he did.”  You answered it when you said he was smart.  He did the right thing.
A: I respect your opinion but as you can tell from the piece I did, I don’t see it that way. I don’t think it’s a matter of who’s the smartest.  I’ll bet we all know some very smart people who have some very wrong ideas. History books are full of them too. I think common sense, temperament and sense of duty are among the traits that are more important in any leader than having a superior intellect is. (‘course it doesn’t hurt)

Will Obama Declare Martial Law?
Q (from 45039): Do you think the “King” occupying our White House will declare martial law?
A: Nope, not unless somebody tells him what I’ve been saying about him.

Why Don’t Debates Discuss Supreme Court Justices?
Q (from 47025): Sir: The choice of Supreme Court Justices is an issue that has not show up in the current Presidential debates. Since the type of Justice a candidate may recommend would reveal a lot about how a candidate understands and honors the American Constitution, why don’t the debate moderators ask questions regarding this important issue?
A: Good question. You might say that there are only three issues of overriding importance. Domestic policy, Foreign policy and the selection of Supreme Court Justices. Romney admires Scalia and Thomas, I know. Unfortunately, we already know the kind of justices Obama will select–doctrinaire liberals. A couple more would change this country for many years.

Obamacare’s Legality
Q (from 59102): As I recall from school, in order for congress to pass a new tax, it had to pass by a 2/3rds majority. If Justice Roberts declared Obamacare to be a tax, I am wondering whether or not it passed both the House and Senate by a 2/3rds majority each? If not, then wouldn’t all the provisions of obama care be null and void?
A: No, unfortunately, it just takes a majority. It takes two-thirds to override a president’s veto.

Have You Ever Thought About Writing A Book On Watergate?
Q (from 75093): Your article “The Lessons of Watergate” was a great read. Have you ever thought about writing a history book on Watergate where you would explore the historical context of Watergate to understand the real lessons of the scandal? It’d be a great read, and you’re in a perfect position to write a history book like that since you were the Republican attorney.
A: Thanks, but actually I did in 1975. The book was “At that Point in Time” It may have been a little premature. Back then no one was as interested in a balanced story.

Does the Mainstream Media Control What People Say?
Q (from 32210): Why doesn’t the Congress and the Senate have the fortitude, courage, conscious of mind, and love of country, to go the mainstream media and appear on their news programs and SPEAK THE TRUTH of what Obama, his administration and his minions have truly done to America? Is the mainstream media so corrupt and powerful that they control what people say and do in these times?  And what can Americans do to counter it? Calling your senators and congress reps don’t help – they stay silent, and show not enough courage to stand up to Obama or the MSM? Are you confident that America will ever return to being a country of truth over fiction and hype?  Thanks for your answers.
A: I share your concern but you give the MSM too much credit. As recently as when I was in the Senate we did not have all the communications opportunities conservatives have now —- the internet blogs and articles, what Fox News has become, talk radio, the right to spend our money on campaigns to match the labor unions and the Geo Soroses of the world. We’re going to be fine in that regard. We just need to do the other stuff that win elections.

Did President Obama Commit His Second Impeachable Offense?
Q (from 76933): By stopping deportation of illegal immigrants, has not President Obama committed his second impeachable offense. The first being refusal to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act. As I recall one of the main points of his oath of office is to “Defend the Laws of our Country.” Am I correct? Thanks.
A: Read my recent piece on this. He hasn’t really done as much as he’s trying to convince the Hispanic community he’s done.

Was “Fast and Furious” Linked To Gun Control?
Q (from 30125): Fred, Even though Obama has been comparatively silent on the Second Amendment, his antipathy toward private firearms ownership is pretty well established, from his Senatorial records and statements. I have heard from a national pundit that his “Executive Privilege” is simply to hide from the public that part of the reason for “Fast and Furious” was to manufacture a “crisis” to gin up support for restrictive gun control he is known to favor. Your thoughts? Thanks.
A: Probably not. Would be too hard to pull off. I think it’s just an old fashioned coverup for a stupid and botched operation to protect Justice Department officials.

More Tax Advice
Q (from 43551): Fred, Re: the 20% capital gains tax on real estate transactions you spoke about in the Obama health care bill. Is this applied if you take the money made on the sale of the previous home and then turn around and purchase a new home?
A: Don’t rely on me for your tax advice but I think that provision has already been done away with…a few years ago.

What Can We Do To Help Change America?
Q (from 99639): Having seen you in your many roles on TV and screen plus liking Reagan, I want to ask two things. 1. Why don’t you run for President and 2. How can my husband be involved on the “front lines” to make the changes that so desperately need to occur? He is driving me to insanity! Every night! Please help me give him a direction so he stops “pissing his life away.” His words not mine. Thank you Mr Thompson.
A: Having “been there, done that” I feel I’ve already “given at the office.” On the other, tell him to keep up, vote and state his views at coffee with the boys. Tell him to take some of his attention off those characters in Washington and check out that smart, funny lady he lives with. Just call me Dr. Fred.

Why Does The Media Continue To Overlook Obama’s Incompetence?
Q (from 92651): First:  Kudos on your articles. You are right on about Obama and his expertise (or lack thereof) on foreign affairs.  What I don’t understand is why the news media continues to overlook Obama’s incompetence, for example the latest blooper regarding his “awards” to Poland.  Thank you for your insightful articles.
A: We are the first generation that has to get the news despite the media, not because of it. DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THE POLES WERE NOT THE ONES WITH THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS !!!!!!! Thanks for the kind words

Will You Join Me As A Proud Constitutionalist?
Q (from 49080): Dear Senator Thompson:
About two weeks ago I sent in a question concerning the Usurper Barry Soetoro in the White House.  There is so much out there to show beyond any doubt that he is and always has been Constitutionally Disqualified to be President. You say you want tough questions.  In so many ways this is easy.  It is just hard to get people to take a stand for the US Constitution on this issue. As a retired military NCO, I have many time taken the Oath of Enlistment.  The oath included supporting and defending the Constitution.  I did this in both war and peace.  I continue to defend the Constitution. There is no such thing as a “birther”.  That is just a term coined by the left to slander those that defend the Constitution.  I reject their term completely.
I am a Constitutionalist.  I am darned proud of that!  So please answer my question I posted earlier.  Maybe you will join me as a darned proud Constitutionalist?
A: All right let me try my hand. I hear the same thing from others too. I did not vote for him. I think he is probably the least qualified president we’ve ever had. I think he is a total political opportunist and his policies are bankrupting this country. However, this a democratic republic and my fellow citizens elected him and it would (and should) take overwhelming evidence to throw him out before his term is out—which I’m trying to make happen in November. But I’m a lawyer (I can’t help it) and I operate on evidence. I know what Donald Trump and many of the blogs are saying and they could be right but the evidence is not strong and I’m not going to let folks get me worked up over something that is not going to happen. It’s a waste of time when there are so many other things that can be done to defeat him. Not what you want to hear but it’s how I see it. Thanks.

Recession Concerns
Q (from 46052): Do you think America is headed to a double dip recession or possibly a depression?
A: Probably not but what worries me is that we usually come out of recessions in 12 months or so. And the deeper the recession, the stronger the come back. We’re not coming back the way we always have before. Our historic growth rate is over 3% and now it has fallen back to under 2% People are scared and wont invest or risk capital. A lot of this is in our hands in November.

ObamaCare Home Tax? Are You In The CFR? And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

Obamacare And Voting
Q (from 23669): Did you know that if you sell your house after 2012 you will pay a 3.8% sales tax on it? That’s $3,800 on a $100,000 home, etc. When did this happen? It’s in the health care bill and goes into effect in 2013. Why 2013? Could it be to come to light AFTER the 2012 elections? So, this is “change you can believe in”? Under the new health care bill all real estate transactions will be subject to a 3.8% Sales Tax.If you sell a $400,000 home, there will be a $15,200 tax. This bill is set to screw the retiring generation who often downsize their homes. Does this make your November and 2012 vote more important? Oh, you weren’t aware this was in the Obamacare bill? Guess what, you aren’t alone. There are more than a few members of Congress that aren’t aware of it either.
A: That’s right. We’re finding out what’s in Obamacare. And don’t forget you pay that 3.8% even if you have no gain on the sale. And if you do have a gain your cap gains tax is going up from 15% to 20% PLUS the 3.8.  Have a nice day AND VOTE

Romney Campaign
Q (32210): Will you be making ads for Mitt Romney?  I certainly pray that you will.
A: Be happy to if they ask.

On Running for President
Q (from 38451): Mr. Thompson, Please run for president. I know there would be a land slide. I don’t want Obama in again because there will be no USA. Please help us.
A: I ran 4 years ago and there WAS a landslide. Unfortunately, I was standing on it! Seriously, thank you and stay in touch.

Budget Priorities
Q (13850): With so many smart people in the House and Senate, why are they unable to start to come up with solutions ranked by priorities…the budget being the first? We all have to manage our personal budget and stick to it…
A: Actually, smart has nothing to do with it. Harry Reid doesn’t want Democrats to have to vote on tough votes. The answer is a Republican senate. I guarantee you they would have a budget.

Politics Is Not A Cause
Q (39483): I am very concerned about Mitt. He has never really sounded close to being as conservative as i would like. You are a southerner, you know how close to the heart conservative we are. I wish you had stayed in the senate, or run for president, I think you would have won. God Bless you Senator Thompson and keep you sheltered in His arms.
A: Let’s remember that politics will never be perfect. Politics is not a cause. Our country is our cause and politics must be used to advance our cause. That involves sometimes accepting things that we don’t totally agree with. And I say this as a committed conservative–one who is very concerned about the possibility of another 4 years of Obama.

Why Don’t We Fight Back?
Q (63135): How can we get the “RNC Talking Heads” to fight back with smart comebacks like (for instance) ..this stupid Bloomberg who wishes to police our eating habits when we have issues of sex slavery and child porn traipsing across America from east to west, north to south and every which way in between!  We have mothers making meth in bathrooms of Walmart! What is so infuriating to me is that these stupid political spokespersons of RNC ads or comebacks to Democrats are not shouting loud enough!!!  about what is really happening to our children, our veterans, our soldiers (male and female), our allies or whats left of them.  When some progressive idiot tells us we eat too much sugar, make a retort about one of these other issues.  Shut their mouths with truth of reality! Hello! … Is anybody out there who really cares?
A: As Hannity would say “let not your heart be troubled” The part of the country that has any sense is laughing at those bozos in New York.

Obama’s White House
Q (38556): Why does Barack Obama get away with stating, “my White House”?  Last week was the 2nd speech we have heard him make this claim.  The White House is property of the American people.
A: Which will be explained to him clearly in November.

VP Nominee
Q (79720): Do you think Mitt Romney will pick Marco Rubio as his running mate, and if so, do you think Republicans will start pushing the whole Amnesty thing on us again?
A: I’m guessing Portman of Ohio.

Are You A Member Of An Organization For A One World Government?
Q (37214): Are you a member of the CFR, Trilateral Commission, Bildbergers, Club of Rome, Masons, or any of the organizations that are for a One World Government?
A: No, but I did serve a brief time as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lawrenceburg, Tn.

The Sad Truth About The Flat Tax
Q (33043): There are so many pundits in the media and representatives in congress that support a flat tax.  Why is this not a conservative mandate?  It makes so much sense.  I have my own theories.  I’m curious what yours are.
A: Any major tax reform like the flat tax will bring people out of the woodwork against it. It’s opponents will run ads showing winners and losers and will demagogue the devil out of it. Politicians know this and avoid having to spend all their time defending all of the many charges against it, even tho it would be a heck of a lot better than what we have. Sad but the truth.

Why I Am Not President
Q (33404): Just wanted to say I thought you were great int he movie “Flight of the Intruder” but you were at your best when talking to randy weaver over the killing of his family at Ruby Ridge all those many years ago. Can we blame Rich Galen for not getting you elected President? haha.
A: Thanks so much. Yep, it was Galen’s fault. We spent too much time laughing in the back of the bus.

“Is Romney Leaning Left?” And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

Hiding Labels and Harry Reid
Q (from 46069): I enjoyed your book.  I’m glad you started this newsletter.  I’m sure I will enjoy it too.  What do you think of groups like, “No Labels.”  Couldn’t we accomplish most of their goals by just demoting Harry Reid to the minority side of the Senate?
A: Demoting Sir Harry is necessary but not sufficient. It’s going to take a lot of good elections to get the job done. Considering our fix, we must turn to that well-known political philosopher, Tom Petty, who reminds us “there ain’t no easy way out.” That advice goes to our “No Labels”  friends too. If you’re wearing a good looking Armani suit, you’re not looking to shed your label. It’s only when you might be kind of ashamed of what you’re wearing that you want to hide the label. Our goal should be to make our party something we’re proud of. Thanks

Will Fred Run For Senate Again?
Q (from 28729): Mr. Thompson in the years since you left the senate have you wanted to run again for senate, or perhaps run a national or local campaign on the east coast??
A: I can honestly say that it has never crossed my mind. Though the Senate is not as well regarded as it should be and used to be, it was an honor for me to have served. And, although I would still like to take the floor on occasion and tell them “how the cow ate the cabbage”, the rest of it has no further appeal to me. I believe that there are seasons in one’s life and then it’s time to move on. The Senate was a very important season for me but no more than that. Besides, staying too long hurts the country. Political careerism and the fear of loosing one’s seat is at the heart of a lot of our problems. Thanks.

A Die Hard Republican’s Concerns
Q (from 75703): If you think the country would not vote for a man who had an affair and a baby, you are out of your mind. Even though he did not have a child, that we know of, or an abortion, Just remember that Bill Clinton had many affairs before and after he was president. Bill Clinton was the best president we have had since Ronald Reagan.  I am a DIE HARD REPUBLICAN, but facts are facts.
A: I suppose you refer to John Edwards. No one is saying an adulterer can’t be president. As you note, Clinton got caught after he got elected. I’m just saying that with all the hurtles that anyone has to jump to even be considered for president, having, in addition, “lying skunk” on your resume might not help. Remember, he couldn’t get the nomination before people knew about the other stuff. On your “best president” Clinton line, remember I helped stuff things like welfare reform down his throat before he would accept it so my take is a little different.

Scott Walker’s Impact On November
Q (from 19087): What does the confirmation of Gov. Walker mean with regard to the November election?
A: I’ve just written on this but, in addition, the national and Wisconsin republican party are turning over to Romney the excellent organization they built for Walker. This is another important part of the union blunder in having this recall election. Wisconsin is now in play. Walker won by a larger margin than Obama did in Wisconsin in 2008.

Is Romney Already Leaning Left?
Q (from 63090): In 2008, I, as an octogenarian, supported your candidacy as well as I could, for I consider you a real conservative!!! You would have made a terrific President!
I am really worried about Romney. He has just appointed 2 RINO’s to be on his transition team. This is a terrible slap in the face to us conservatives. Even before he is formally nominated by us Republicans, he is already insulting us.
Obviously, I am very shaken by his riding off to the left ALREADY!!!!!
Please console me!!!! I am almost a nonagenarian now and need to know why I should even bother to vote in November. I have voted in every possible election I could for the last 70 years. But what assurance do we conservatives have that Romney would be any better than Obama??? Somehow am beginning to distrust Romney, if he can do something this rash– this early!!
Thank you!
A: First of all, thank you for your steadfast involvement and your kind words. I hope that I can give you some comfort. We shouldn’t be too hard on Mitt too soon. Understandably, people are going to be flyspecking every thing he does and says for signs of ideological impurities. These transition appointments are not that big of a deal and shouldn’t demoralize you. Unless he does a total 180 he is light years better than Obama on taxes, spending, judicial appointments and our military, just to name a few issues. Both the left and the right are going to be saying all kinds of things about Romney but he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Amidst our candidate’s imperfections, let’s not take our eye off the big picture–where Obama is taking this country. And don’t you even think about not voting. Thanks again.

The “Race Card” In Elections
Q (from 42567): Honorable Senator, I live in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and we recently had our primary and my question is this: How big is the statement that Kentucky’s and Arkansas’ Democratic voters voting 42% and 40% respectively uncommitted and not for Obama? The news outlets have chalked it up to our states being racist. Do you believe that the rest of the country feels that we are racist or that we are fed up with Obama’s failure as president?
A: Isn’t it strange how adding 5 trillion dollars of new debt onto the backs of our children brings out the racism in people? Don’t worry about it. They place the “race card” on everybody, even Bill Clinton. Where were all the racists when we elected him, one of the most inexperienced candidates we’ve ever had, president of the United States?

“The Mormon Or The Muslim?”…”Do You Own A Gun?” And Other “Ask Fred” Replies

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

The Mormon Or The Muslim?
Q (from 80120): Who can we support?  Romney is a Mormon and Obama is a Muslim. Never has the lessor of two evils been such a disgrace. Ron Paul is a better choice, but if we vote for him, we put Obama back in office. What has happened to my country?
A: Don’t fall for this Mormon stuff. That would be falling for the Obama game plan. Now that the general election is here, it’s going to be respectable in the eyes of the mainstream media to engage in all sorts of demagoguery about Mormons. None of us will ever get our ideal candidate but this country is headed for a cliff and it has very little to do with organized religion. We’ve gotta go with Mitt. Obama selections for the Supreme Court for another four years will have an adverse effect on the proper role of religion in our country and in our schools as well as a host of other issues.

How To Get The US Government Back On Track
Q (from 76249): How are you planing to get America back on track financially and morally? The government has destroy the American image abroad, no one trust[s] us any more.
A: I laid out my ideas on avoiding US bankruptcy to my friend, herein, a few days ago. We don’t need the government to get us back on track morally. That’s not the government’s job. The government just needs to stop promoting things that make us weaker morally.

Edwards Scandal Run It’s Course?
Q (from 26852): Do you think that John Edwards will finally be out of public life when this scandal has run its course?
A: I think he will be out but I’m not sure he knows it yet. From what I read, he seems delusional, still scrambling for Attorney General, etc, as the scandal was breaking around him. Even now a guy like him probably plans a comeback. He doesn’t realize that even the American people have a limit to their tolerance. Good question. Thanks.

Upholding The Constitution
Q (from 92677): It seems that some years after America was founded , the Congress/President has been allowed to little by little compromise and violate our Constitution regularly, until today. Is there little left Congress/President feels obliged to uphold? Our precious nation is about to be overtaken by [a] Communist White House that certainly has grossly failed to uphold the Constitution! How do you reverse this truth and demand a restoration of our Government back to truly following our Constitution as our Founders intended?
A: The answer to this question is the same as the answer to the question “How do you raise a family?”  The answer is, you do the best that you can-one day at a time. There is no magic formula or clever tactic. God gives us credit for having a little common sense (for some reason) and the rest has to do with a good heart and dedication. So to your question, I’d say simply search out those few brave souls who are willing to run for office and fight for those things you believe in and help them. There are still some out there and their numbers are growing. It’s called representative government. It all falls back on your shoulders. We need better leaders. And those who willing to become good leaders need better constituents. Be one of those.

Medicare Concerns
Q (from 39813): To the Most Honorable Senator Fred Thompson, I see a spell of Davy Crockett in you. My question is: I heard from one of our State Senators of the State of Georgia that who ever is elected President of the United States, will have to contend with cuts to Medicare involving Doctor’s pay for treatment and/or hospital stays. I start Medicare July 1, 2012. I am afraid that this will result in an increase of Medicare Supplement Insurance, is this true?
A: You are very insightful. I grew up under the watchful gaze of Davy. As a surveyor he “laid out” my home town of Lawrenceburg, Tn. and we still have a statue of him on the square. On your concern, there is little, if any, chance that current retirees will take a hit. But future retirees will, eventually.

Present Day Unions
Q (from 77357): What is your opinion of present day unions? I feel their time is past. They were needed at one time but they are corrupt and are breaking the back of America with their outrageous demands.
A: The fact that power corrupts applies to unions as much as it does to any other entity. Not all of them but the bigger and more politically powerful they became, the more they became tools for the bosses. Workers have seen this as much as anybody.

Is Fred A Gun Owner?
Q (from 76013): Are you a gun owner?
A: Yep. Just don’t ask me where I keep them.

The President’s Power
Q (from 03817): Congress is letting the president walk all over them and the citizens of this country. Why are they refusing to keep their oath of office and represent us and uphold the constitution?
A: Why do dogs chase cars? Keep in mind Congress didn’t elect him, we did. and we gave him the power that goes with the presidency. Think of what it would have been like if we hadn’t also elected a Republican house.

Nuclear Power And The Energy Situation
Q (from 07027): Your take on the energy situation please. If a specific is necessary (or more simple) your feelings about Nuclear power. Sincere thanks for your perspective.
A: No time for a seminar here but newly discovered deposits in the US is changing the equation big time. We’re going to become a much larger producer if liberal politicians don’t stop us. We need nuclear and we need a repository for the waste. Again, won’t happen with Reid and Obama.

Voting
Q (from 29605): How can we change the mind of some individuals to not vote for Obama?
A: Unfortunately we have very few people who are changeable. Many are wed to a vision of the way they wish things were instead of how things actually are. I’d try “Look at key nationally known Obama supporters. We’ve known them longer than Obama. Do you want the kind of country most of them envision?”  Thanks.

Talk About The Future
Q: I have often wondered why Republican politicians don’t clearly spell out the threat to America from the Leftist politicians by describing them as what they are – Socialists in nature – and by explaining what will happen to the USA in the long run if the Democrats should gain complete power. Why do you suppose they shy away from that?
A: Generally, voters respond better to attacks on policies than they do attacks on people, unless the target has personal baggage. Actually our guys are getting better at talking about the future. Congressman Paul Ryan, House Budget Chairman for example. It worked in 2010 and I think it will work in 2012 big time. People are now concerned, angry and scared. What fell on deaf ears in the past, won’t now.

Ask Fred…About Afghanistan, Property Taxes, And A Possible VP Nod

Thank you to everyone who has submitted an “Ask Fred” question. I have very much enjoyed the exchange of ideas. Here are a few of my responses. Go here to submit your own “Ask Fred” question.

Fred Thompson, former U.S. Senator, actor, and...

Social Security?
Q (from 07306): Why is it that the Government is looking to crush Social Security and Medicare when I believe there are other ways to fix them. Why not put Americans First before we keep giving billions away “Afghanistan for one.”
A: Because fixing it properly would require some difficult choices. Career politicians are not into that. It puts their livelihood at risk. Anybody else still for term limits?  On Afghanistan, even worse—spending billions and still lose the war, which is where we’re headed. Thanks

Property Taxes Undermine Property Rights?
Q (from 60148): Since property rights are supposed to be inalienable, why have my property taxes increased by 400% to $7000/yr while my income (Soc Sec)is $640/Mo. My father, a WWII vet with 13 yrs in the Army worked his life to pay for this property. Now the County will probably foreclose and evict his family heirs. Do Americans actually OWN property, or do we just pay liege to the lords of the manor?
A: Wow, you make an excellent point, The right of govt. to tax is well established, so it becomes a political question you have to settle at the polls, generally (the state or local govt on property taxes). BUT at some point taxes can seem more like a “takings” like a condemnation, which is restricted under the constitution. Of course, the government would point out the increasing value of the property, an issue you can contest too.

Martial Law?
Q (from 59860): I am afraid that President Obama WILL DECLARE Martial Law suspend the Constitution, eliminate the US Supreme Court and disband Congress. This Guy scares the hell out of me. What is your thoughts ?
A: Lot of things to be concerned about but these are not among them. Let’s focus on the real concerns: our country sliding into bankruptcy and a European–type irrelevance. Thanks

 Eliminate the Electoral College?
Q (from 20151): Are you supporting the compact to negate the electoral college?  If so, why?
A: No, but there is a proposal out there that, while keeping the electoral college, would allow states to pledge their electors to the person who gets the most votes, nationally. The constitution gives the states this authority. The argument is 1) we don’t need the turmoil that comes from election someone with fewer votes. 2) Currently, most states are firmly red or blue and are taken for granted by the candidates, Only a handful of states matter, and 3) imagine Romney winning he popular vote and Obama concentrating on turning out big city votes in two or three key states and winning the electoral vote. The current system wouldn’t look so hot then to a lot of us. Would it?

“Obama All The Way…OUT!”
Q (from 11413): Why am I getting these emails I am neither a Fred Thompson supporter nor a republican. OBAMA ALL THE WAY!!!
A: Sorry, just thought you could use a little enlightenment. Guess I was right. I like your slogan with one small addition:”Obama, all the way…OUT”

Fred For Veep?
Q (from 55358): Honestly, any chance of you accepting the Vice Presidential spot on the upcoming Republican ticket to balance moderate Romney? You have been pretty silent until e mails the last three day, keep em coming.
A: Thanks for asking, pal but NOPE. Have to admit, since I’m poor, homely and have a  conservative background, I would provide pretty good balance.

How To Defeat Obama…
Q (from 56601): What can we do to make sure Obama does not get another term?
A: For most of us Get To The Polls. For our leaders, don’t make stupid mistakes that take focus off of his record.

Why Afghanistan?
Q (from 54110): For the life of me, I have always been puzzled by what value there is in Afghanistan.  I just don’t see them as a big trading partner and I believe that we can ill afford to be the world’s policeman.  Every time I see that some local soldier was killed there, it makes me question why we went there in the first place.  Can you explain this foolishness?
A: Fair question. First, you make my case that a president’s first duty, when he sends troops in harms way is to answer like yours and explain it the the American people. Obama has clearly not done this. He sees there’s no good short term politics in it for him. A good president would look to the long term interests of the US. He has information and access to expertise that we don’t have. Here’s the case in a nutshell. An operation like 9–11 probably could never be carried out without a safe haven for the jihadists. Afghanistan was their safe haven. It could very easily become one again. Many of the bad guys are hiding, and waiting for us to leave, next door in Pakistan, where they are already influential. Pakistan itself could be vulnerable to takeover by them and, of course, Pakistan has nuclear weapons. International terror is still very alive and while we must be smart as to where we target our efforts but we are not going to be able to  hunker down at home and keep the rest of the world out— unfortunately.  Thanks

Romney In Debates
Q (from 75050): How soon in the upcoming debates between Romney and Obama do you think it will be before the media confronts Romney about some of his characterizations of Obama? Do you think Romney will back down or affirm?
A: Having debated Romney, I’ve followed his performances pretty closely. He’s gotten a lot better. He’s tougher. We saw this with Newt in Fla. He knows that how the voter views Obama is the whole ball game, It’s a referendum on Obama. Mitt won’t back down.

Undoing Obama’s Agenda
Q (from 33477): I’m concerned that the things Obama is putting into place can’t be “undone” when we get our country back….please ease my mind…you would make a wonderful president….thanks.
A:   It all depends on how many Republicans are elected to Congress. Past Congresses cannot bind future ones and new laws can be passed to undo old ones—a majority of votes in the House and 60 votes in the Senate, sufficient to defeat a filibuster. Also, if Obama is reelected a two-thirds majority will be needed to override his veto, a tall order. However it all depends upon us the voters.

Not Enough Billboard Space
Q (from 32968): How is Obama getting away with so many Constitutional violations? If Congress does not have the gonads to Impeach him, the congress members that won’t due what they swore to do Uphold the Constitution) should have their names plastered on every web site, billboards, and commentary programs as possible. Why isn’t that being done?
A: Sorry pal, there’s not enough billboard space.

-Fred Thompson
